Meeting Manners
Bnet.com published an article (2009) with five helpful ways to “Mind Your (Meeting) Manners.” Meetings can ensure collaboration, productivity, and cohesiveness in any project. To ensure fluidity, whether conducting or attending a meeting, take a minute to review these meeting manners.
1. Respect people’s time. “By keeping meetings as short as possible and showing up on time or early, you send a message that you understand everyone’s busy schedules.”
2. Provide information and support. “Send out an agenda and any supporting documents or slides in advance, which can help drive the meeting before it even begins. If you’re a meeting atendee, read up prior to the meeting to be sure you’re prepared.”
3. Observe common courtesy. “Wait your turn to speak at meetings, and know that while heated discussion is fine, insults and yelling aren’t. If you’re the organizer, serve as a moderator and encourage Q&A during or at the conclusion of the meeting.”
4. Pay attention. “It’s important to be an active meeting participant. That means asking questions and giving feedback of course, but also rederring from texting, fidgeting, or doing anything else that could serve as a distraction.”
5. Say thanks. “Offering a “thank you” to a meeting organizer for bringing the group together, or to atendees for their time and input, can go a long way. It will also help ensure success at future meetings.”
